EXT. – CARNIVAL – DUSK
On
this unexpected chilly summer night, people crowd together in their shorts and
sweatshirts to attend the annual carnival. The lights of the rides and the game
booths are now becoming the only lights in the sky, as the sun is almost
completely set. FORTUNATO stubbles towards MONTRESOR for he has drank too much.
Pleased to see him, MONTRSOR chuckles to himself as he sees FORTUNATO in his
tight, parti-stripped dress.
MONTRESOR
(Happy
to see him, still chuckling as he says his name)
“Fortunato! So good to see you and you are
looking very good today may I add! But I have to tell you, I got a pipe that
passes for Amontillado but I am beginning to have some doubts.”
FORTUNATO
(Slurring
a few of his words, sounding surprised)
“What?!
Amontillado? A pipe? Impossible! Mainly in the middle of a carnival Montresor.”
MONTRESOR places
his hand on FORTUNATO’s back and begins to nudge him, attempting to keep him
sturdy as they begin to walk.
MONTRESOR
“Listen,
I have my doubts and I was stupid enough to pay the full Amontillado price
without consulting with you in the matter first. But he gave me a bargain that
I didn’t want to miss out on. I should’ve consulted you first but I –“
FORTUNATO
(Cuts
MONTRESOR off pulling away from MONTRESOR)
“Montresor,
Amontillado!”
MONTRESOR
“I have my doubts Fortunato.”
FORTUNATO
“AMONTILLADO!”
MONTRESOR
“I
have to satisfy them though Fortunato!”
FORTUNATO
(Stops
walking and stomps his foot)
“AMONTILLADO!”
MANTRESOR
(Turns
and looks at FORTUNATO)
“I’m
on my way to Luchesi. If anyone has a critical turn, it’s him. He will tell me
-.”
FORTUNATO
(Cuts
him off)
“Luchesi
can’t tell Amontillado from Sherry.”
MANTRESOR
“Yet,
some fools will have it so that his taste is his taste is a match for his.”
FORTUNATO
(Gives
in and gestures his hand to MONTRESOR to follow)
“Okay,
Okay. Come, let’s go.”
MANTRESOR
“Where?”
FORTUNATO
“To
your vaults.”
MANTRESOR
(Stops following FORTUNATO)
“No
Fortunato. I will not impose on your good nature. I understand you have an
engagement. Luchesi –“
FORTUNATO
(Looks
at MANTRESOR, turns and begins to walk again)
“I have no engagement, now come.”
MANTRESOR
“Again my friend, no. It is not the
engagement but the
severe
cold with what I perceive you are afflicted. The vaults are
insufferably damp. They are covered with
nitre.”
FORTUNATO begins
to shiver as winds begin to pick up and he is almost completely sober and his
“drunk jacket” has worn off. Trying to not seem like he is affected by the
cold, he wants to convince MANTRESOR to follow him.
FORTUNATO
“Either
way, let’s go. The cold is nothing, Amontillado! You have been imposed upon.
And as for Luchesi, he can’t distinguish Sherry from Amontillado.”
