Christine Urio Fortunato Adaptation

Christine Urio                                                                                                             Fortunato Adaptation

CARNIVAL:  OUTSIDE, DUSK.  PEOPLE ARE MULLING ABOUT AIMLESSLY, WALKING PAST GAMES, EATING FRIED FOOD, AND WAITING IN LINE FOR RIDES—IT IS ORGANIZED CHAOS. IT’S THE END OF SUMMER SO THE NIGHTTIME AIR IS COOL, SO PEOPLE ARE WEARING LIGHT BUT LONGER CLOTHES.  THE SUN HAS JUST SET SO THE SKY IS NOT YET BLACK, BUT DARK BLUE.  WITH THE STARS BEGINNING TO COME OUT AND THE RIDES, THE CARNIVAL IS FULL OF TWINKELING, BRIGHT, FLASHING LIGHTS, GRABBING PEOPLE’S ATTENTION.

Start with FORTUNATO and the narrator doing things close friends do:  show them eating dinner together at a classy restaurant clinking wine glasses, walking along the greens of a golf course carrying their clubs and laughing, sitting in big arm chairs in a study smoking cigars and talking.
Portray the narrator’s pride, perhaps with awards or distinguishments upon his walls.  He has is college diploma hung on the wall amidst other distinguisments throughout his life and career.
Shoot to people at a cocktail party; it is set inside a swanky hotel and the men and women are fashionably and appropriately dressed for the occasion.  Waiters are passing h’ourderves on silver platters.   FORTUNATO is drinking wine and laughing amongst a group. Let the audience overhear snippets of him disrespecting the NARRATOR.  The NARRATOR is a little ways off from the group and acknowledges that they are mocking him.  Darkness clouds his eyes but he continues to smile.

Shoot to the NARRATOR cynically plotting his revenge.  He is in his study stooped over a piece of parchment, his brow furrowed, his face red, writing furiously.

Shoot to a carnival.  There is a big Ferris wheel in the background and kids eating cotton candy running about.  There are lots of people so it is loud with conversations mingling together.  Enter FORTUNATO, slightly tipsy, wearing a tight fitting parti-stripped dress.  NARRATOR jovially greets him.

NARRATOR:
My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met.  How remarkably well you are looking today!  But I have received a pip of what passes for Amontillado, and I have my doubts.
FORTUNATO:
How?  Amontillado?  A pipe?  Impossible!  And in the middle of t he carnival!”
NARRATOR:
I have my doubts.  And I was silly enough to pay the full Amontillado price without consulting you in the matter.  You were not to be found, and I was fearful of losing a bargain.
FORTUNATO:
 Amontillado!
NARRATOR:
 I have my doubts.
FORTUNATO:
Amontillado!
NARRATOR:
And I must satisfy them
FORTUNATO:
Amontillado!
NARRATOR:
As you are engaged, I am on my way to Luchesi.  If anyone of them has a critical turn, it is he.  He will tell me
FORTUNATO (interrupting)
Luchesi cannot tell Amontillado from Sherry
NARRATOR:
And yet some fools will have it that his taste is a match of your own
FORTUNATO:
                                                Come, let us go
NARRATOR:
Whither?
FORTUNATO:
To your vaults
NARRATOR:
My friend, no; I will not impose upon your good nature.  I perceive you have an engagement.  Luchesi—
FORTUNATO (interrupting):
I have no engagement; come.
NARRATOR:
My friend, no.  It is not the engagement, but the severe cold with which I perceive you are afflicted.  The vaults are insufferably damp.  They are encrusted with nitre
FORTUNATO:
Let us go, nevertheless.  The cold is merely nothing.  Amontillado!  You have been imposed upon.  And as for Luchesi, he cannot distinguish Sherry from Amontillado.

Black Screen (Scene Location N/A)

- The first shot is nothing but a black screen. Carnival music is playing softly in the background as a weary voice begins to speak.

MONTRESOR
(Voice Over)

They say sticks and stones can break your bones, but words may never hurt you. However, I have dealt with Fortunato's sticks and I have dodged many a stone... This time, his words were the source of my pain. And so came the time to gather sticks and stones of my own. Ones of justice and, more importantly, revenge. After this cruel yet fitting idea stuck in my mind like a rock in mud, Fortunato continued to accept my then misleading smiles. Misleading, for instead of smiling out of content, I was smiling out of malice and joy for what cruel fate my hand would bring Fortunato next. You see, despite the amount of respect and fear he was able to recieve from others, he had a weak spot that I only recongized-his pride for his love of wine.

EXT. Dusk A "Supremely Mad" Day of the Carnival Season

- It's loud with flashes of bright light filling the air as Montresor fumbles through a crowd of excited Carnival-goers. As he breaks through a large mass of people, he is confronted by his newly realized enemy, Fortunato, who shows signs of excessive celebration and drinking.

Fortunato
(Jovial)

Montresor! My good friend, how are you?

- Montresor feels a rage building inside of him. However, he uses that energy and works it into a somewhat believable smile.

MONTRESOR
(Over Exaggerated and "Put On")

Oh, Fortunato, Fortunato, Fortunato. What a pleasant surprise! You know, you're just the man I wanted...no...NEEDED to see! You see I have come across a pipe of Amontillado and I just can't tell if it's genuine. And I couldn't pass up such a good bargain.

FORTUNATO
(Slurring)

A pipe of Amontillado?! A PIPE?! HERE...AT THE CARNIVAL?!? (Laughing) My dear Montresor, that's not possible.

MONTRESOR

Well I had my doubts, and obviously you're much too busy to be able to tell if such a wine is genuine. Maybe I'll go to Luchesi. Surely he will be able to-

- Montresor begins to walk away. As he's leaving he is stopped by the booming voice of Fortunato. A wicked smile dashes across his face as he turns back.

FORTUNATO

LUCHESI?! Nonsense. That man could not tell wine from wine!

MONTRESOR
(Slight Slurring)

I think you mean water from wine, my...good...friend?

FORTUNATO
(Heavy Slurring)

But of course! Water from water. Just like I said!

MONTRESOR
(Almost feeling sorry for Fortunato)((Almost))

And yet somehow people equate his word to yours. Perhaps that may be true...

FORTUNATO

Nonsense. Pure nonsense. Come with me.

- Fortunato grabs Montresor's arm and begins to lead him, stumbling over himself.

MONTRESOR
(Trying hard to conceal a genuine, malicious smile)

Where?

FORTUNATO
(Filled with Confidence)

To your vaults. I will show you what it means to have the taste of God.

MONTRESOR

Oh. Please. I could never impose when you're so very busy...

FORTUNATO

I will never be too busy for this, my friend.

MONTRESOR
(Smiling Fiendishly)

I must warn you. The vaults are incredibly damp. It would be unwise to-

FORTUNATO
(Laughing)

Let us go at once! Oh my dear Montresor...Hahahaha...Luchesi...hahahaha...water from wine...hahaha

- The two walk off-screen as Fortunato leads the way, something Montresor has no problem with as he smiles while keeping an eye on his prey.

Narrator: “Luchesi”
Fortunato: “Dude are you stupid, Luchesi doesn’t know shit about wine”
Narrator: “well its good, and the money is gone already so lets just drink and have a good time stop bitching.”

INT. MONTRESOR’S MANSION. DAY

MONTRESOR walks down a spiral staircase. He stops as he reaches the bottom and addresses his servants.

                                                MONTRESOR
I realize that the Halloween carnival
is today, but I want you all to stay
here. There is plenty to be done.

                                                BUTLER
Of course. We will be right here

                                                MONTRESOR
(Smirking as he opens the front door)
Good. I’ll be back in the morning.

EXT. CARNIVAL. DUSK

MONTRESOR, surrounded by friends, notices a tipsy FORTUNADO, wearing a jester’s costume.

                                                MONTRESOR
                                    (smiling)
Fortunado! Aren’t you a sight for
sore eyes? I’ve been wanting to tell
you that I just came across a couple
bottles of Amontillado, well at least
                        I think it’s Amontillado.

                                                FORTUNADO
                        Amontillado? Are you serious? That’s
                        a rare wine.

                                                MONTRESOR
Well I have my doubts. I know you
your wines, but since you weren’t
around I had no choice but to take
                        the offer, just in case.

                                                FORTUNADO
                        Amontillado? You sure?

                                                MONTRESOR
I hope. I’m actually on my way to Luchesi’s

                                                FORTUNADO
                                    (interrupting)
Luchesi is an amateur! He doesn’t know
                        his Amontillado from his Sherry.

                                                MONTRESOR
A lot of people go to him, they say he’s good.
Besides I’m sure you have better things to do.
We’re in the middle of a carnival.

                                                FORTUNADO
We have this carnival every year, but how
often do we come across Amontillado?
                        We’re going.

                                                MONTRESOR
Listen, the truth is that you’re not looking too
good, my friend. My wine cellar is damp and
                        filled with rat poison. Luchesi…

                                                FORTUNADO
                                    (interrupting, FORTUNADO grabs
MONTRESOR by the arm)
I don’t want to hear it, we are going!

                                                MONTRESOR
                        If you insist.

Cask Adaptation

INT. – MANSION- NIGHT

The party going on in the mansion is enormous.  Hundreds and hundreds of people are spread throughout the massive house.  The guests are loudly conversing with one another while gulping down large quantities of wine.  Everyone is dressed to impressed.  All the men are wearing dark expensive suits with thousand dollar watches wrapped around their wrists and the woman are dressed in elegant dresses wearing glistening pieces of jewelry every where from there ears down to their hands.  In the midst of all the high-spiritedness, MONTRESOR stands alone, staring grimly at a group of four gentlemen talking and sipping on expensive wine.  The one man, FORTUNATO, who seems to be leading their discussion, is also the drunkest.

FORTUNATO
(angry/annoyed)

What a shitty party.  Whose idea was it to put all these incompetent assholes in one room?  I see enough of these jerkoffs at work.

The other three men nervously put their heads down and awkwardly agree. FORTUNATO continues to drunkenly ramble and the camera then shows MONTRESOR slowly making his way towards FORTUNATO and the group of men.  His eyes are filled with hate and disgust.  But, just as he approaches FORTUNATO, he undergoes a complete transformation

MONTRESOR
(joyful)

Mr. Fortunato! I’ve been looking around for you.  How are you?

FORTUNATO

Ah!  Montresor! Finally a face worth seeing.  I’m doing all right, and yourself?

MONTRESOR

I’m just fine, sir.  I’ve caught wind of some information that I thought might catch your interest.

FORTUNATO

Well spit it out already lets hear it!

FORTUNATO puts his arm around MONTRESOR and begins to take a few steps away from the other three men who let out a sigh of relief as they walk away.

MONTRESOR
Well sir, I know you’ve been busy lately with trying to close the deal with the Chinese and-

FORUTNATO
(jokingly)

Fuck them.  Montresor, you’re a great assistant and a great kid, but I swear if you bring up anything about that deal I’m gonna pummel you into the ground.

Montresor
(laughing)

No no sir, nothing about that, I promise.  I remember the other day you were telling me about you’re love for good scotch right?

FORTUNATO
(slurring his words now)

Ahh yes of course, nothing better.

MONTRESOR

Well, a good friend of mine owns a liquor store not too far from here and he just texted me and told me that he just got in a bottle of 1955 Glenfiddich Janet Sheed Roberts Reserve.

Fortunato stops walking and looks up at MONTRESOR in complete awe.

FORTUNATO

Impossible. Do you realize how hard it is to get your hands on that?

MONTRESOR
I assure you sir, it’s true.  He wants to sell it.  Since I know you’re a lover of scotch, I let him know that you might be a possible buyer.

FORTUNATO

Well what the hell are we still doing here? Let’s get a move on!

MONTRESOR

But sir, don’t we have to stay here for awhile longer.. the party just started about an hour ago?

FORTUNATO
(laughing)

Son, more then half of these people here work for me.  I’ll do whatever the hell I want. Let’s get moving.

FORTUNATO and MONTRESOR start walking out of the party.  MONTRESOR clenches his fists and smiles at FORTUNATO.
