Character Sketch: Nick McAree
Nick
is captain of his high school basketball team.
If this wasn’t enough to give him a chip on his shoulder, than coming
from a wealthy family and living in the snootiest part of town for the past 17
years of his life definitely has. He’s a
senior who already has a lock on the Homecoming King title and while he flirts
with any girl who has a smile, he has yet to hold down a steady
relationship—what’s the point of committing when you’re as good looking as he
is? He has one younger brother who
excels academically, making his parents favor him over Nick, causing him to act
out and be obnoxious in order to gain attention; although, he isn’t aware he’s
doing that, he just thinks it’s cool to be cocky. He has always had things handed to him
throughout his life which is why he joined basketball—because it is a challenge
for him. Being the pretty boy doesn’t
always equate to being the athletic type, and while he was initially put on the
team to become a “more well-rounded person” to apply for ivy league colleges he
has no desire to attend, he became enthralled with the sport. Though, he doesn’t like to admit it, not even
to himself, because that would show that he actually cares about things. The role he plays in the sitcom is that of Alpha
male, reigning over the school like it is his kingdom and giving teachers a
hard time, causing him to be a source of comic relief, as well as conflict. He is shallow on the outside which masks the
depth of his personality that he is struggling to identify. While he may act jolly and carefree, Nick
doesn’t know what he’s doing with his life and has no direction which scares
him, motivating him to be the cocky boy everyone hates to love.
